When the Trumpet Sounds

The Book of Revelation causes many to shutter; we wonder exactly what to do with the images it presents. And so, we stay clear of it because who’s going to understand it all anyway? It may be that you struggle with some of the details, but if you can keep your eye on the overall picture, it is incredible how all of the smaller issues will begin to fall into place. This book will not tell you the year that Christ will return, and it may not answer all of your questions, but Revelation is intended to sum up the entire scriptures and give us critical insight into the great plan of God. Join in as we focus on Revelation 8–11 for a series entitled ‘When the Trumpet Sounds.’

In Revelation chapter 10, at what seems to be the height of our anticipation to know what will come from the blowing of the 7th Trumpet, we find the story interrupted by the arrival of a 'Mighty Angel'. Something major is about to happen and it’s time to stop and listen. A new and different scroll appears which speaks of God’s wrath being poured out on the world and a great persecution of the church. What did this mean for the church of that day? What does it mean for the church today?

In Revelation chapter 11, we find two things to be striking. The first is that prophets in the Bible are almost always mistreated and abused, and the second is that the followers of Christ are often persecuted to a similar degree. In this chapter, we are reminded of how God will always raise up those who will speak his word in the midst of overwhelming hardship, and how even though evil may flourish for the moment, God's kingdom is forever.
