We tend to have a limited definition of “control.” A teacher may control a class, but cannot dictate all actions or thoughts. A coach may control a team but not the gameday weather. When we speak of “control” it has implied limits. So, when we say, “God is in control,” are there limits to that? In this message, Dr. John will unpack the Biblical teaching of God’s control. We will see that God’s providence means He intervenes in all creation, in every moment, in every life. Jesus is the power and action of God to hold this universe together.

The Christmas story is an account of two births. Luke writes first of the miraculous birth of John the Baptist, and then of the birth of Jesus. Luke doesn’t place John the Baptist’s story first because it is more important. It is preparatory. Elizabeth’s child would prepare the path for Mary’s Child. The lesser leads to the greater. Listen to the story of John and allow that to lead you to Jesus.

The story of David and Goliath is widely known. We learn it in Sunday School. We hear it referred to in our culture. Still, the lesson of the story gets distorted. Many assume that the story is an encouragement for us to successfully fight our “giants” but Dr. John points out that victory is not ours to win. Victory comes from a higher source than our own efforts. David remembered God’s promise and recognized His presence. The battle is God’s to win!

Many think of “vocation” as their job, but the word means “calling.” It points to the fact that God has a calling for each of us. It may entail the place of our employment, but it is much more. God had a calling upon David to be King. It wasn’t obvious to his family and not even Samuel. Yet, we measure externals and God looks at the heart. Dr. John uses the early life of David as a template for us all. God has a purpose for us and that purpose surfaces as we yield to God from the heart.

We tend to imagine that we could do great things if only our situation was different. If we had more favourable circumstances or greater opportunity, then we could be all that we hope to be. But that wasn’t David’s story. Nothing in the background of David suggested that he would be king. There were significant barriers that stood against him ever becoming king. Dr. John speaks of David’s greatness in history and in Scripture, but David didn’t pursue fame or power. He pursued the purposes of God. David’s story demonstrates that God chooses our time and chooses us in our time. As we seek His plan, we find significance and blessings.
